A YouTube video recently uploaded by the channel My Nati has reignited discussions surrounding the presidency of Jacob Zuma and the extent of state interference during his tenure. Titled “Is Zuma being made a scapegoat? It’s really hard to believe,” the video presents a contrasting narrative to its title, featuring explosive testimony from forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan about an alleged government conspiracy to deport him.
The Premise
The video opens with the channel host summarizing the gravity of the claims. He introduces the clip by stating that O’Sullivan has revealed how former President Jacob Zuma and former Minister of State Security David Mahlobo (referred to initially as “David Masho” by the host) attempted to force him out of the country. According to the host, this persecution was a direct result of O’Sullivan’s relentless fight against corruption [00:00:19].
The “General Mocketi” Offer
The centerpiece of the video is O’Sullivan’s detailed recounting of his arrest and subsequent interrogation. He describes being handcuffed and threatened with life imprisonment before being offered a startling plea deal by a high-ranking official he identifies as “General Mocketi.”
O’Sullivan alleges the General told him: “We’re prepared to cut a deal with you… if you give up your citizenship and pack your bags and leave South Africa, we’ll drop all the charges against you” [00:00:00], [00:02:09].
This “deal,” according to O’Sullivan, was clear evidence of the motive behind his arrest—not to serve justice, but to remove a troublesome investigator from South African soil.
Involvement of Top Ministers
O’Sullivan’s testimony implicates the highest levels of the security cluster. He claims his attorney was told “in no uncertain terms” that the directive came from the top.
Minister of Intelligence: O’Sullivan names David Mahlobo, stating that the Minister “wanted this to happen” and that he needed to be out of the country immediately [00:03:02].
Minister of Police: Towards the end of the clip, O’Sullivan mentions that the Minister of Police was also involved in the conspiracy, though the video cuts off as he attempts to recall the specific minister’s name at the time [00:03:10].
Scapegoat or Architect?
While the video’s title questions whether Jacob Zuma is being unfairly blamed for the country’s woes, the content provides a scathing counter-argument. O’Sullivan’s account paints a picture of a state apparatus—from police generals to cabinet ministers—actively weaponized to silence whistleblowers and protect corrupt interests.
